Chenopodium or Goosefoot is a leafy vegetable and a weed, which grows with other cultivated crops. Humans have been consuming the seeds and leaves for thousands of years. Several countries grow the plant for its medicinal benefits, as it is used in a number of home remedies and has several medicinal benefits and uses as well. The non-toxic leaves of chenopodium are consumed all around the world for centuries and like other green vegetables, it also offers innumerable health benefits for the health of human beings.

  1. The leaves of chenopodium are a very rich source of antioxidants, nutrients, vitamins and protein. The vitamin A content of this vegetable is equivalent to that contained in carrots. Two cup leaves of this green vegetable can provide you around 14,000-16,000 units of vitamin  A and 60-130mg of vitamin C.
  2. As the leaves of chenopodium are rich in fiber, it can cure constipation and are useful in remedying piles as well. You can consume the leaves regularly to improve your digestion and even the amino acid present in the leaves can help the body to perform a number of functions properly.
  3. It is considered as a heart tonic, as it is good for the heart. Leaves are a rich source of iron, potassium, zinc and calcium.  Even the leaves of the plant are good for the spleen, liver and gall bladder, for which you can consume the juice of the leaves. Drinking 10 ml of juice can keep your digestive system healthy.
  4. To purify the blood and hemoglobin level, people use the juice of its leaves, which is also a traditional medicine to treat intestinal parasites. It can even be consumed thrice a day to get complete benefits for the disease.
  5. You can also use and include this leafy vegetable in your diet to improve your appetite. 

Other Benefits

Chenopodium leaves are also used to treat kidney stones, reduce internal or external swelling, treat jaundice and anemia and for blood purification. Apart from this, the leaves can also treat burns, intestinal problems, mouth ulcers, pyorrhea, scurvy, gas and other urinary infections.
